Ok, so I have a Giant Vac leaf vac that is pulled around behind anything you want, to pick up leaves. It really doesn't get used around here, because I have a blower on my Steiner and prefer to use that. I just blow them into the ditch and forget about them. Friend of mine was discussing some financial transactions we had, and the Giant Vac subject came up. Seems he wanted it, and he has a Calico 9mm with a 100 round magazine that is still in the box, never shot. I knew Calico had gone under during the magazine ban, but apparently it is back in business, as it appears their website is up and running, and a good phone number to purchase parts.
The question is, did I mess up, or did we both get a reasonable deal?
Here is the Giant Vac of mine

And here is a similar Calico

He bought the gun back in '90 before the ban, and I don't think it ever got removed from the box.

I'd say he got the better deal. He will be able to do productive work with the Giant Vac. You'll just have to worry that some teenager will steal your new "hunting" rifle and murder half a shopping mall or high school.

Sorry, I just have zero tolerance for these efficient man killing tools in civilian hands. Real hunters don't need 100 round magazines and neither do homeowners or those defending their tractors:eek: .

Was it a good deal, if your happy with it then sure it is. :D That's all that matters isn't it.

The Calico's are great guns. I have two of them and they are real fun at the range.

I would have to disagree with you IslandTractor. Why ban it, it's no different than any other semi auto with a 100 round drum. I rather enjoy taking mine out to the range and shooting targets with it. I prefer a large capacity magazine since I don't have to reload as often. As the old saying at Calico goes, tin cans beware!

I disagree with island tractor as well. Some people just dont undersatnd that the bad guys get them with or with out the bans. They are safe in a reasonable persons hands then them anyways. BTW i am very pro second admendment. Ok since i went a little to the right on that one. If you wont using the vac and you will enjoying the calico at the range then it was well worth it. Ive been looking for one for a while and would have made the same deal. I like bargining and trading like that anyway. Then uncle sam can get his part.

I don't use the Giant Vac because i have a blower on the Steiner to get rid of my leaves. Since the Calico is brand new, I will probably leave it in the box and just add it to my "haven't shot" collection. As far as somebody stealing it and misusing it, that would be bad. However, if someone has it in their mind that they are going on a killing rampage, the last thing not having a gun is going to do, is stop them. They just go on to other types of killing machines.
I would be more concerned with my AC-556 with it's 90 round drum being stolen, than a Calico.
I have shot several of the Calico's in .22 and they are fun. Especially since the owner would sit around an load up a bunch of spare magazines and just let us empty them.
One hundred round drums have been common for many years, as the '27 and 29 Thompson's I have shot had them. They make a shooting trip fun, versus a shooting and loading trip. Cans beware!
The deal isn't concrete yet, we just laid down the general rules. To us, our friendship is more important, but we do trade equipment, money, labor and time quite often. I was going to put the Giant Vac on ebay to generate some cash, but he said he could use it. He is currently in one of the no money cycles, so if I wanted him to have it, it required me to horse trade it to him. I also got him to agree to allowing me to buy 1/2 of some 3/4" x 14" flatbar that I have stored here. Stuff is new from when he closed his shop down, and I couldn't ever get him to come off of any of it. Now I can buy it, probably at close to scrap prices, but only for my own use.
As the old saying goes, more people have been killed with Ted Kennedy's car than with all of my guns!

I'm not trying to pick a fight guys and I certainly don't have anything against hunting or protecting yourself or even blowing cans to smithereens. I was just reacting to that recent shopping mall massacre where some stupid screwed up kid was able to steal an assault rifle (AK47 as I recall owned by a relative) and slaughter innocent people. You are correct that he could have done it some other way but it is less likely he would have killed so many or done it so easily and quickly. These tragedies do occur in other countries that have stiffer gun control laws but they seem to happen far more regularly here.

What's so terrible about taking a break and reloading your gun anyway?

Nothing wrong with that, as it gives the barrel time to cool. I laid my AC-556 down across a recycle bin, and it melted halfway thru it before I noticed. Opps, wife wasn't happy about me bringing home an altered bin. The size of the magazine really has no bearing on a mass shooting, because they have the option of just carrying more revolvers, or extra magazines, etc.
If it weren't so hard for people to carry firearms legally, some "kid" would probably just get his head blown off when he dragged out the gun in a public place, trying to pull such a stunt. Since our current laws make it hard for law abiding citizens to carry, we become sitting ducks when "kid" decides he doesn't like what somebody else did to him. I reside in a state where conceal carry permits are easy enough to acquire, but my jobs in the past, and now the one coming up, all restrict carrying while in their trucks. Since the amount of time I am out of a truck is marginal, while away from my home, it becomes just another form of gun control.
Anyway, I was just wondering what everyone else thought about this trade, good or bad...

I dont think you are picking a fight Island. I respect your opinion i was just voicing mine. Im the type that believes that if it was just one concealed Hand gun permit holder like myself were there and was allowed to carry in that mall (which in most case we are not) then it may have just been one psyhco kid that would have died and not all the inocent people. but you never know the out come. Besides the issue here isnt the gun. The real issue is that the media made a martyr out of him. Now some other kid will try to top this for thier chance to fame. Even this idiot siad that this would make him famous. You want to stop this stuff then go after the media not the guns.
