Getting the bearing out

On the assumption that the housing is white metal or aluminum brass might not be the shim of choice, (dissimilar metals) and cause corrosion related problems.
Maybe epoxy set the bearing?

Housing is plastic, and since it was so close a couple wraps of aluminum foil took out all the slack. Not perfect, to be sure, but it will be at least as durable as the ABS housing, and by not forcing it and letting the bit do the work it should last for quite a while, given my limited usage. I did put in a new bearing, since I had one in the bearing box* and it's all back together and running very smooth. While it was apart I chucked the armature in the lathe and burnished up the collector ring with some abrasive tape that was made for polishing video tape heads, a find on American Surplus that I've used a lot for this.

*Years ago I worked at a photofinishing lab, and when they would retire and old piece of equipment, they would pull all the spares from maintenance and chuck them. I had them save all that for me and I'd sort the usable stuff, including an amazing amount of new, quality bearings with OEM numbers.
