Soundguy, To make an accurate, adjustable over/under voltage monitor/interrupter circuit, is a little bit involved to do it correctly.

Perhaps for someone without an electronics background... The only part that would be needed from a place other than radio shack would be the EM latching high current contactor.. the actuall comparitor electronics and support circuit can be soldered up on a piece of wafer board in minutes. If you want to start adding in other goody circuits that all cause 'trip' like overheat, low oil, engine kill, etc.. then yeah.. the circuit grows,a nd you have to make them all hit a common trigger to dump the switch.. again.. just some circuit scratching on paper, and some soldering... no biggie..

For the average person who has never smelled burning rosin... .. yeah.. I'd say get the pre-made one soup'ed up genset with all the magic goodies already inside it that someone else did the magic soldering..

Hit a RS and look for a basic semiconductor book by forest mims III.. there is a compariter 'basic' circuit in there I have used for years as a building block for everything from voltage regulation to crude 'if' logic type circuits... uses the cheap couple dollar quad compariter IC in a 16pin dip that RS sells. Add on other circuits to fit your needs.

I have a few of Mims RS books at home, but they are older ones. I use them from time to time for project ideas, but I didn't come across anything that jumped out at me as a relatively simple solution for this type monitoring. But my experience is mainly in repairing things others have designed and not very much designing of my own.
I also find that as I get older, the walls on my box get higher and higher

The comparitor makes for a great analog monitor circuit starting point. I also have a stack of the mims books. over the years I've used many of his circuits including things like using mosfets and a capacitor discharge setup as a timer vs using a 555 timer IC... it's mostly neat stuff.. but has some practical applications.. like mosfet driven motor speed controllers ( PWM ).. etc..
