To those of you who has used one of these. Have you ever gotten a "tight" bale. I know they will never be as tight as a newer baler but wondering if there was a technique that would help. This is what I've learned so far. Start the bale in the lowest pto speed your tractor will allow (that tip was from other thereads here). After starting the bale I've run the baler at full PTO speed and at about half speed and get similiar results. I've fed the hay as fast as the baler will accept and also at less than max feed. What's your thoughts.

All things equal operating at pto speed at slower MPH on a smaller windrow should make the tightest bale. You could add more springs to get a tighter bale also

More springs. I thought I saw a mod for that somewhere.

The slower ground speed allows for a tighter bale. There was a Super C that had heavier springs also.

605C is a tough, simple baler. Need to have your windrow spread the full width of the throat of the baler to get a good start. Otherwise you have to keep turning back and forth to keep the hay feeding to prevent a cone shaped bale. Often times the bale will not start to roll and you think, "should I stop and clear it?" But usually if you proceed on just another couple of seconds it starts wrapping and you're safe at now having to dump the hay and start over.

You know just a few models before this one the hay was started to wrap by inserting a wooden post in the baler? Yep, they when the hay was feed the farmer saved the post for the next haying season.

Things got easy from there!!

Thanks, we finally got done with this cutting but overall I'm disappointed with my yield. 21 bales out of 16 acres. Pulled the rubber compression roller to be recovered. Hoping to be able to do a better job of riding the bales. Saw an article about shorting the chains to increase pressure but would like to know how much is to much.

The 605C was sold from late 1973 to 1977/78. Vermeer sold 24,000 "C" balers. I cut my teeth on a Vermeer C baler. In 1974 a Chevy C20 4wd truck cost $4,000 new and so Did a new 605C. That baler paid my way through college & still today I sell parts for that good old friend today. Only a few people are left that were around that day in 1972 when we pulled that Vermeer 605A in the field.

Thanks for the share. Just sent off the presser roller to be recovered. Should have it back before next cutting. Wasn't too hard removing and only had to cut one bearing out. Cleaning up and replacing worn out parts. Hoping that most of my issues will be taken care of.

Update, just got back the presser roller. Really looks good. Turnaround time was quick and couldn't beat the price. Should have it installed within a couple of days depending on work schedule.

If the belts are old and warn it may be time for new belts.. It can make a huge difference but also a chunk out of the pocket too

Belts were replaced last year. Once I've got the roller installed I'm going to check the spring tension on the two Bale tension springs because one broke at the hook and I had to make a new hook which shortened it a bit.
