Checking the oil on the gearbox of most mowing decks is messy and counter productive. Using a large zip tie (white 1/2 wide and long), I cut one down to about one foot and use it as a dipstick for my gearbox(s). I put the dipstick/tie down in the filler whole, then compare the oil level from the outside side of the gearbox making sure the oil level on the dipstick/tie is equal to the oil check plug. It's fast, clean and you don't waste any oil.
