That should work just fine. Does the manual mention if you need a GL-4 or GL-5 spec oil?

The only thing I can find in the manual is "high quality, extreme pressure gear lubricant with and anti foam additive" in SAE 80, SAE 90 or SAE 140.
In another section it calls for Ford 134 but I didn't think that was a gear lubricant suitable for the front differential and final reduction gear cases.

The Ford 134 spec is actually a UTF spec and usually looks something like this. ESN-M2C-134-A (or B,C,D). Many tractor manufacturers suggest either UTF or gear oil in axles. My preference for a gear only application is a gear lubricant.

Rethinking the work that all those ford engineers did years ago.. eh?
As DP said.. the ford 134 fluid is a UTF and is suitable for trannies, final drives, hyds.. etc.. etc.. however, I too generally use a gear oil in a gear only application.. IE not a common sump system.. etc..

After thinking about it, with the slow speeds these gears are seeing, you could probably use about anything that wouldn't attack the metals. That is the only thing that scares me about the GL-5 and copper or bronze.
I have a few gallons of the Ford 134 but it must be at least 10 years old. It has always had a lid on it. Does that stuff get stale or go bad?

You can get some gl-5 oils that are yellow metal safe.. I know castrol and penzoil both make some.. and I have seen some select walmarts carrying a supertech with a yellow metal safe blurb on the pail..e tc.
As for your old oil.... I've been known to use new sealed up oil that was a few years old.. course.. I own lots of old equipmetn that ain't always real picky about what oil it leaks out... I don't think I would use 10yr old oil in a brand new 40,000$ machine.. but a 1800$ beater.. sure!

Look for an MT-1 rating on the GL 5 stuff -- it is then "yellow metals safe"
