Who usually puts in the gear oil in a new rotary cutter purchase--the retailer or the buyer? I know manufacturers like to ship dry.

Installing gear oil is the dealer's job. That would fall under predelivery assembly and inspection. If you have it drop shipped to you directly you probably need to install the oil. Irregardless of who is supposed to, someone needs to so check it anyway.

Well as you can probably guess, I did not check. The purchase was from a dealer's lot, and I did ask about the gear oil--I was actually trying to make sure it had the right type. Was told it was ready to go. Unfortunately, it was not. Amazingly, it ran about 20-25 hrs. dry, before seizing up so tight the engine would not turn over with the PTO engaged. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you asked, and he said "it is ready to go " I would surely be talking to him, alot ,

Apparently my experience was just the opposite with my Howse brush hog. I got a little better price by buying one just the way it arrived at the dealership, so I had to assemble the A-frame, etc. And the dealer told me to be sure and put gear oil in it because they're shipped dry. Then I was surprised to find it full to start with; never had to add any in the time I owned it.

Who ever puts it together, puts it fluid in. If the dealer assembled it they should have put the fluid in. If you put it together, then you would have to put the fluid in. Good Luck

It sounds like they owe you a gearbox. Of course nobody is going to remember telling you it was ready to go. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I was lucky I ran my howse Brushhog dry for an hour or so and it didn't lock up. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Still works fine.
