I have a FarmTrac 535 - 8 speed manual transmission. Do I use transmission fluid or gear oil!? Thanx for your help.

What does your owners manual recommend? It will probably be transmission/hydraulic oil. GL 1 thru GL 5 gear oil is too thick for the tractor to use efficently.
Go with the manual.

That's the problem in a nutshell, l don't have an Onwer's manual. Bought the tractor used. Tractor shops closed over the weekend and I was trying to get a couple of things done this weekend. Was hoping someone who had one of these tractors would comment. Tthanx for the feedback._

80-90W gear oil in not actually substantially thicker than hydraulic transmission fluid.

If you do the research, you will find that the hydraulic fluid is approximately a 10w30 motor oil viscosity, and the gear oil tested on the same scale, is approximately a 20w50 motor oil viscosity.

You can also visually see there is not a big difference, with a simple side by side pour test.

In an axle, or manual transmission, HP gear oil offers the highest degree of protection.

If you can find Justice Brothers Gear Oil Treatment, adding it will also provide noticeably easier shifting.

Most friction materials used in wet disk brakes, wet disk clutches, power shift transmissions, and some limited slip differentials are not compatible with gear lube. That's one reason companies like Case have their Hy-Tran, John Deere their HY-GARD (JD20), Kubota UDT, etc. You really need to find out the correct lube. Not familiar with your tractor at all so I wouldn't hazard a guess but I thought I would warn of the potential problem.

I had the same question. I realized the manual said you can use 80-90 gear oil or UDT, but can you MIX them? I had a new bx25 and they didn't check the fluid levels before they delivered the tractor. When I bought oil for the front axle at the dealer, they gave me 80-90 gear oil so I hoped that is what was in there. I am uncomfortable about mixing different types. Anyone know if that is OK?

Drain and flush everything. Use Hy-Gard or Hy-Tran in everything except the engine and cooling system. Use Shell Rotella for pre 2007 engines in the crankcase.
