Dave, Yes, I saved the shaft. My plan was to remove it and save it in case I ever sold the tractor but I couldn’t figure out how to get it all the way off without doing more disassembly than I wanted to do. So, it’s still there, in one piece.

Sweet. You're better off having it on just in case.
And yeah fully removing it is just plain a whole thing...

@Langanobob & @Dmacleo: thanks for writeup.

Just curious, but how do you get the main driveshaft out of the way? Is there a spline or do you have to disassemble the U-joint or ?????

I didn't have to do main drive shaft (just shaft going to front axle) but GC2400 is bolt/spline type on main. IOW remove bolt and use wedge to expand joint to slip off. pretty sure will have to do this soon, 15yr old fan belt on it. and have to pull that to do belt.

not sure if gc1723 is same. irony is I was just under a 1725 (same thing really) and cannot remember...
