Gator xuv 4wd problems

Have an '08 gator xuv, about a week ago I noticed the front wheels will not engage into 4wd while in reverse. Rears start to spin and fronts do nothing. Works great going forward in 4wd. Dealer wants to take the front end apart
Any others out there with same

I'm wondering whether this is normal. The locking might require forward motion to engage. Once engaged, they do work in reverse, but they might not engage while trying to go backward if they haven't first engaged in forward.
Did you try to engage 4wd in forward before using reverse?
I vaguely recall my Polaris Sportsman works the same way...but I could be mistaken :confused2:

the 4wd is electronically engaged, when the rears start slipping the fronts engage
