Gate welding idea

Gates always sag. I'd put some wheels on it.

My gate is made of 14 gauge 2” square tubing, is 16’ Long and hasn’t sagged a quarter inch in the 7 years it has been there. It swings over a concrete driveway and the gap is the the same all the way across just like when it was installed. It has an electric opener also and gets Used a lot. It isn’t rocket science to design a gate that won’t sag and if you use a stout hinge post and anchor it deep with a lot of concrete it won’t lean either. Mine is about 5’ deep with around 1000 lbs of concrete.

True enough bdog. All about sizing for stiffness and properly anchoring. A supporting wheel makes for a lighter cheaper solution but then you need a level surface for it to track. Personally I like the slider/track design vs. swinging if it will fit the situation. Currently, I am wrestling coming up with a design for the front of my driveway. Ears on.

I did ditch the idea using the thin wall pallet racks. He had a big stack of 2x2" 3/16" angle iron 10' long I snagged up about 500lbs of. Figured I could use it for various projects and going to build the gates out of it. Going to have twin 10' gates and adding galvanized horse panel inside the gates. Also snagged some 6" metal pipe for post with 3/8" a
Walls.

Appreciate the advice guys.

I would recommend putting a top on your post, so 50 years from now it doesn't rust off at ground level, from the inside.

Already done :). It'll be a bit before I get the gates built and installed, several other projects and priority's ahead of them, but I have the material now so when I catch a break I can jump right on it.
