This morning, I took my wife's car to the nearest QuikTrip and filled it with gas at $3.399, came home and got my pickup and the gas cans for lawn equipment and went back to the same station and the price had come down 8 cents to $3.319.

Now you know. . . the early Bird doesn't always get the worm.

It amazes me that when I shop in Baytown Texas home of one of the largest refineries in the US that gas prices are all over the place. As I work for the chemical side of one of these companies I watch gas prices everywhere I travel. Even with the same brand stations around the region the price differs up to 20 cents.

What is strange was that end of summer last year gas was running about the same price as diesel at $3.69. Then through the fall gas prices dropped to about $3.00 while the price of diesel never moved. Now gas is creaping back up around $3.39 and again the price of diesel is still the same price of $3.69. You can not tell me there is not price fixing going on.

Yep, that's the same here.

Diesel prices at my little Walmart in Bowie have been consistent over the last three weeks at $3.599 a gallon. It may have gone up this weekend, but last Friday it was still the same. When you add in the 3-5 cent discounts if you use their credit card or a gift card, it can be significant for a 30 gallon purchase.

The cheapest gasoline I see on a consistent basis is in Saginaw, TX at several stations there on Business 287.

$3.59 is pretty good, a couple of places in Decatur are usually the cheapest I see, up to 12 cents cheaper, I just don't usually make the drive up there to warrant the savings (19 miles one way)

Station location is a big determining factor for prices.

Oregon and New Jersey do not have pump your own fuel. The price of fuel is not affected a great deal by labor. My observation is that most stations are affiliated with a convenience store or fast food outlet. That's where the money is. I don't like pumping my own fuel. I drive a Prius and Dodge PU.

It was reported for the first time in 30 years we were actually exporting gasoline. The importing of crude oil had not decreased. The main reason was less consumption in the U.S. The refinerys in the U.S. have not been running at capacity and no new processing facilitys were planned, even though the last refinery built from ground up was in the 1970's.

A freind of a friend knows someone that owns 3 convenience stores on the same road all about a mile apart here where I live. The gas prices are different at all three. He says the reason is his overhead, sales, thefts, liability, the neighborhood, etc... are different at all three stations. As for the wild swings, that is dictated by his supplier. He only makes about 10 cents per gallon profit. He says his major profit is all the junk, food and drinks he sells in the store that people buy when getting gas.
