Massey Ferguson 135
I am replacing my PTO lever plate on the side of my tractor. There are several of the tubes on the market
Any recommendations on a particular base for these items (Do's and Don'ts). Both surfaces are cleaned and ready to go. My newest addition is a Massey 135.

Some gaskets do not require sealant, in fact the manufacturer recommends not using one on some. Check with your dealer shop or the WSM for your tractor. Did it have gasket sealant when you took it apart? Good clue. I have always used Permatex products based on what it seals against. Sometimes new gaskets come with a recommendation.

Is this in addition to a gasket or in place of a gasket?

If you don't plan on ever having to remove it I like RightStuff gasket maker, that stuff is great but a pain to remove or clean off, otherwise I just use a decent brand black or gray rtv.

If it has a standard paper gasket I'd just use a gasket tack spray on one side.

I stopped buying all the different colors and now only buy the red Permatex high temp. Very happy with it.

Whatever you use, use it sparingly. If used in addition to a paper gasket just a film on one side an grease on the other side.
If instead of a paper gasket, just enough to provide a gasket thickness, not a big bead all around and the squished out when the bolts are snugged.

Is that in 'addition' to a gasket, or used as a replacement to a gasket?

With a gasket...unless otherwise advised I use it with all types of gasket material...
FWIW...in most automotive applications grease makes an adequate gasket sealant (apply both sides of gasket and surfaces)

Good old mechanic's trick.
Seals good and the gaskets are always re usable as they don't stick.
Perhaps a head gasket is the only exception but even then I'm not sure.

Shucks I've used greased cardboard many a time for home made gaskets.
