Gas Welding and Cutting - Safety Gear

Just bought a Smith Cutting and Welding Setup and would like to know what more experianced folks use for gloves and goggles.

I have a pair of wrap around Oakley's ANSI impact rated and fairly high UV ratings. Any reason I need different glasses.

Looked at the leather gloves where I swapped my tanks at and they seemed a tad heavy for gas work. Are lighter weight leather gloves ok or should I buy the elbow length cotten lined ones and get on with it?

Light cutting, up to 1 inch 3 or 4
Medium cutting, 1 inch to 6 inches 4 or 5
Heavy cutting, over 6 inches 5 or 6
Gas welding (light), up to 1/8 inch 4 or 5
Gas welding (medium), 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch 5 or 6
Gas welding (heavy), over 1/2 inch 6 or 8

For what I did at work, a #5 face shield worked great. A good pair of leather welding gloves although thick, are a good idea. Shoes are very important since they are usually under your work while cutting and pant cuffs are a bad idea.

Tip #2; Big red beebee's will burn through 2 layers of clothing.

The layer after that is skin.

Even when arc welding, I usually just use unlined cowhide gloves. I like the dexterity. If you're planning on picking up hot metal, use the cotton lined gloves and plan to replace them often.

Welding gloves plus a proper cutting shield is a start, Personally i like the goggles better.

You should get yourself a welding jacket too. Especially if your going to be cutting overhead. Your shirts will thank me.

And wear boots, keep your pantlegs outside of them too. Those little sparks can find flesh like nobodys business. Nothing worse than one in your boot, except maybe your ear

Don't forget a hat, burning hair smells terrible. Also some way of dousing a fire, either an extinguisher or some water close by.
