"but the stations are saying that some oil rigs in the gulf had to shut down for the hurricane and it raised the price of oil and drove their prices up. If this is true, it raised the price of your gas too even if you are far away from the hurricane threatened area. For those of you who live hundreds of miles from the gulf, did your gas go up 40 cents a gallon last night?    - Tallyho8"

Sounds like at least part of what you are hearing is a story. Just so that you will know, here in Colorado our gas actually went down a bit this weekend. And it didn't go up following Katrina or 9/11, so I doubt it will for Gustav. My brother lives in southern Okla, and gas down there went up a dollar during the first two events and he is betting that it will for this one too.

One "maybeso" is that profiteering from someone else's misfortune is more acceptable legally and socially in some places than others. Another idea is simpler: In the western US with small towns and a thinner population everybody knows who owns the local gas station and so there is instant accountability. ---- YMMV, rScotty

Please explain what the price/barrel of oil on an exchange today has to do with the retail price of fuel?

Interesting point of view. If the price / barrel of oil has nothing to do with the current retail price of gasoline........... shouldn't gas still be 50 cents / gallon at the pumps ?????

I'm guessing the price/barrel of oil on an exchange DOES have something to do with the price at the pump.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You ignored the word TODAY in my sentence. Price on the EXCHANGE TODAY with the price of fuel at the PUMP TODAY. You also ignored my analogy. Try reading ALL the words next time. They have meaning, assuming you read them.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I had to stay out of this until I can see the pump prices. :D Last week diesel was 4.19. Yesterday and this morning it was 4.09. Course I don't know if the price fluctuated Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

A .40 cent price increase in the south LA area is suspicious while the prices in other places seem to have been dropping.

After Katrina we did have a case of gouging up here. The distributer was telling stations to raise prices. He threatened to put locks on gas pumps if the stations did not raises prices. Pretty sure he did too. I think he even put it in writing. I know the state and the media was all over him like stink on poo. Dont know what happened to him though.

I say we also have the problem of to many people let business walk all over them .

Why don't you just walk (instead of drive - that would use gas) past the businesses that you think are walking over you. There is nobody holding a gun to your head to make you purchase from any business.

Funny thing is, The price of crude oil has gone down alot & is still dropping .Futures down to $109.35 today Yet, gasoline (at the pump ) only drops 1 to 1/2 cent per gallon. If crude goes up $1.00 . gasoline at the pump rises by 5 or more cents. Go figure !!

Gas don't jump here. Still 87 is 3.79 a gallon

I grew up in Florida and in 2004 I went down and got caught in Charlie. Gas was on short supply at operating stations and ironically sent to inoperative gas stations trucks. Gas never went up in price at all. Gas in Florida is shipped BTW.

I do know that price gouging if here or in Florida the government are pretty proactive. Someone after Charlie wanted $25,000 to remove 3 huge oak trees on a lady's house. Well, it was the sheriff's wife and it was not nice. After 911 in Wisconsin some gas stations were charging over $5 a gallon. The state attorney had ask citizens to report anything like this.

I don't agree with it even if you are in business to make money. I have seen alot of local businesses and major businesses extend their hand to help out after major disasters. If ya do agree with this, can I kick ya in the ribs when you are down?

Finally I have power and am back and OK with only minor damages.

I missed most of the news having no power but heard something about them planning on stopping the speculative trading of futures on oil and I think this will prevent a lot of the quick ups and downs that we have been seeing in gas prices if it is indeed true.

I missed a lot of news in the last 5 1/2 days with no power so I am going to go sit in front of the tube and catch up now.

I wonder where Ike is? :(

This morning Ike seems intent on paying a visit to Texas....

I feel sorry for the people in Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba. Seems like they have been hit by 3-4 storms. One a week.
