Gas powered winch

I picked up this little gas powed winch with the idea that I could use it for a few things around the farm. I'm looking for advice about putting it into use, such as what size cable, will it work without a fairlead, what kind of rating (pull) do you think I could get from it?
It looks solid and the old B&S engine runs but needs tuned, does anyone have a link about these older engines? Any idea what it was originally built for?

I'd use 3/8" cable. For general farm use I'd think about mounting it on a carryall and that way you'd have your tractor weight to ground it. If you have a GN ball in your truck you could add an adapter to let it sit/hook on the ball. Something like a keyhole.

Not technically a capstan, which has one end of the drum open (http://www.advancedconstructionproducts.com/capstan.htm), but could be used to function as one by taking 2-4 turns on the drum & pulling on the tail vs having the tail anchored to the drum.

I'd use winch rope http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/...36C367A19A7667=0&bcsi_scan_filename=ropes.htm rather than steel, more flexible, easier on the hands, some even floats. MikeD74T

So 3/8 wire rope wouldn't be too large for the drum, I didn't think I could get by with larger than 3/16 like ATV winches? I thought about having a hook welded on the back so it could be anchored with a tree saver strap.
Intersting that it could be used like a capstan, I like having that option.
Would this winch likely or not have enough power to pull say 18" logs?

It is hard to tell how much pull it would have without knowing the amount of gear and pulley reductions. It looks like a gear reducer on the engine, pulleys and the winch combined would slow it down a good bit but we need numbers to say for sure.

Well looking at the engine I can say that is a3.5 to 5hp with the 6:1 gearbox I've taken enough apart to know. As for the sheaves can you get us some diameters? And a measurement of the spool. Then we can get a rough line speed and load rating.

The power of a winch can be multiplied with sheaves block & tackle style. I'd be more concerned with the strength of the winch frame/bearings/drum shaft. For 18" logs I'd anchor the load sheaves to something other than the winch frame so it would only see a fraction of the load. A 3:1 or 5:1 Z-system used in rope rescue would work well with your winch especially in the capstan mode.
