put some gas in the 682's tank yesterday in preperation for today's grass cutting festivities Went to change the plugs today before I started and when I cranked it over without the plugs I got drenched in gas Drained the oil and it was all gas too I decided to go ahead and put in some new oil/plugs and leave the gas tank alone. After that it ran great with no problems. Any guesses as to how the 1.5 gallons of gas got inside my engine?

My guess, carb float stuck down in the bowl, gas dribbles into the cylinder, past the rings into the crankcase.

Bad needle & seat, bad (waterlogged) float, stuck float (open), debris from the carb float bowl causing the needle to not close (seal) in the seat which usually comes from crap in the tank.
If the float does not make the needle fully close, the gas will pour thru the carb until the level in the gas tank is at or below the level of the needle & seat (this is the only fuel shut off between the gas tank & carb other than the shut off at the tank). I had this same issue last year on a Cub 1872 garden tractor.

Sounds like an explosive situation. All of that gas may have loosened up any sludge in the crankcase. So you may want to watch the oil filter or change it after running a little bit.

hey builder, got one question for ya. Why isn't the fuel pump stopping this? It seems to me, that the gas wouldn't be able to flood the carb because it couldn't get past the fuel pump? Or is it when the gas level is higher than the fuel pump it just drains past and into the carb? Yeah, that's probably right

It was your lucky day- if the spark plugs would have been in and if there was still a bunch of gas in the cylinders, you might have bent a rod when you cranked over the hydrolocked engine.

Hi,
Same problem in a Cub Cadet 1811. Told the shop I thought it was the fuel pump. They said, "Nah". They rebuilt the carb, sent it back, 2 days later, crankcase is filled with gas again. Turns out it was the diaphragm in the fuel pump. Replaced the pump and all is well. But, boy, is the crankcase clean!!!!

funny you say that hoffman, my first instinct was to by-pass the fuel pump, but I didn't have enough hose to do it. There's some parts up on ebay it looks like I might be bidding on

Sounds like a good excuse to put a shutoff valve on the line prior to the carb.

Way ahead of ya. Next weekend I'm gonna pull the carb for a teardown and inspection, then replace the fuel line/filter and install a shutoff valve. If that doesn't fix it, I'll have to find a way to blow er up and get started on that honda conversion

Molotav Tractor comes to mind thinking about so much gasoline being in the block. Now conditioning yourself to shut off the fuel petcock when you shut down the tractor at the end of the day.

Any tractor with an updraft carb will usually just drain the tank onto the ground (Mpls Moline 442) Unless the seals and carbs are rebuilt on occasion. Just park it where do not want weeds and make sure check the gas level BEFORE going out plowing. (Been there, done that)

I haven't pulled the carb yet, but can tell it's not a walbro. Does anyone know a place that sells rebuild kits for these carbs? Figure a good soaking, new floats and gaskets should do it some good, but having a hard time finding parts on-line.

Are you going to make it a "solenoid" shut off valve?

well, it's been determined it's the fuel inlet valve on the carb. Ordered a rebuild kit. So long as it gets here by saturday I'm gonna rebuild it and replumb the entire fuel system and do yet another oil change on her Grass is getting tall, hope this works
