I have a G2160 garden tractor that I use mostly to mow and occasionally plow snow. For most of its life, I've kept it in the garage, but over this winter, I've needed to keep it outside with a tarp over it. Today I went out to plow, and I noticed a spot in the snow that I thought might be a gift from one of the neighborhood cats. But once I started it up and made a few passes up and down the driveway, I noticed that I was leaving a trail. So I parked it and turned it off to take a look, and noticed a nice, slow, steady flow of fluid dripping from above the left rear "driver's side" tire.
The fluid looked like new engine oil; a relatively translucent goldish-brown liquid with some viscosity to it. Since I haven't changed the engine oil since last spring, I'm pretty sure it's not that since I would expect it to be much darker. The lever that moves the snow blade and MMM up and down is above the general area as the leak, so I'm thinking it could be hydraulic fluid? But I'm rather ignorant when it comes to mechanical stuff like this, so I'm looking for some guesses.
Since the tractor is outside, and I have no room in the garage to examine it right now, I wasn't really able to get a good look. But I'm thinking it's probably a bad hose. Does this sound like a good possibility? If it's hydraulic fluid and hose, how big of a deal is it to fix? Is there any danger operating the tractor with a leak like this, or would it just render the hydraulics inoperable? If I can drive it down to the dealer for service, I'd like to do so, but if it's potentially harmful, I can just have them pick it up.
Thanks!
