Garden Time, JINMAN ??????

My little plot pales in comparison to what Jim did last year, but I do have my onions in the ground already. Also bought my other seeds. And feed and seed store said they would have tomato plants in by next week. Maybe a little early to chance that yet.
Jinman, you going to keep us up on your garden project as you did last year?

Sure Bill, we set out 300 onion sets this weekend and planted some turnips. I've been tilling my plot after turning in some barnyard compost, so it's all ready to plant when I get ready. We bought seed this weekend also - beans (two types), English peas, blackeye and purple hulls, radishes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and squash (4 kinds). We'll plant tomatoes and peppers from sets a little later on. I'm not planting corn this year. I can't see working that hard just to feed the raccoons.

Next weekend I hope to plant peas, radishes, and potatoes. Maybe I can get a few pictures then also.

That sounds great. I should be starting to prepare of field in the next few weeks. Planting large garden and about 1500 pumpkin.

Well, it's only about 1/3 acre, Egon, but sometimes it feels like 10 times that much. Getting old is no fun.

Hunterridgefarm: Just 1600 pumpkins? I told my wife we should plant some pumpkins, and she asked me what I was going to do with them.

BTW: While I was in the feed and seed store on Saturday, there was a fellow there who said he had just planted 8400 onions the previous week and he was back to get another 1600 onion sets. I'd say that fellow is gonna have one big job with 10,000 onions to grow and sell. Heck, he probably has a bunch of other stuff he'll plant too, but he does it for a living.

Around here, the farmer who does best is the one who takes the biggest chance on when the last frost will be. One fellow I met last year had planted his watermelons about 3 weeks ahead of anyone else. Since we had a very hot springtime (several 100º days in April) his crop was harvest ready almost three weeks ahead of those who planted by-the-book. He had a wide open market for his melons and made a nice profit. With a frost, that same guy would have been singing the blues. Farmin' is tough!

Pressed cucumbers are just about as good as fresh sliced on fresh bread with salt and pepper but what about the the tomatoes?

Some years ago when living in Alberta I had some success with planting onions, spinach and parsley in the late summer. They would pick their own time to green up in the spring.
