I loved being able to open the garage doors with the first warm weather. But as soon as I wasn't around I had birds trying to build nests. This happened last year too and I'm tried of tearing out nests and running the birds out before I close the doors. Done a little looking and did a search here, but haven't come up with any recommendations. So would be interest in any experiences, good or bad, and recommendations.

Thanks,

There are kits available but I keep it simple with a couple of standard Harbour Freight mesh nets. I just use old bungy "S" hooks to clip them on my vinyl siding trim. That leaves the doors free to open and close but the screens have to be moved to put a vehicle in. I usually have projects going on or have the garage set up for yard sales so the vehicle part is not an issue.

I don't have bird nesting issues. The problem is though we have 7' x 9' doors, the garage interior height is ten feet. The hummingbirds come in and die if I don't see them.

I've been seeing something like this at the home shows for the last few years. A little more "involved" than QRTRHRS's solution. :)

I don't remember what the pricing is on it.

Thanks for the replies. I have 3 single car doors, so I may need to get creative. Tried looking for a LifeStyle dealer and it showed the nearest on in NJ. Looks like solutions range from $20 to $2000. Suspect I'll start on the low end.

I've wondered about this also. I leave my shop open in warm weather and I do have an occasional problem with birds coming in and not being able to find their way out. I found if I wait until dusk, they can discern where the doors are and will fly out. They may get a nest partially built, but when locked out they abandon it. Thank goodness it's only an occasional thing, and it's mainly the wrens that are industrious enough to build a complete or nearly complete nest in one day. If it gets to be a serious problem, I probably would go down to the sporting goods store and buy a cheap fish net and modify it to fit the door.

Have you tried a plastic owl or "scare eyes" [inflatable ball with stickers and red mylar tape that simulates fire]. I put them on my porch and watched birds make a panicked 360 turn when they see them.
For $12 it might be worth a try.

I had forgotten that my garage door frames aren't square at the top - they are angled to match the post braces. So I'm probably going to have to go with something simple.

Thanks,

Birds are dumb -- they can get in but can't get out. I just have to laugh. The owls work however--- at least for me.
