Since many of us collect older cars. What is your opinion on what vehicles will be future collectibles. Chrysler TC, cadillac XLR, new thunderbird, dodge viper, prowler ect... 70s 80s 90s ? and maybe a few words why you think it will be a collector
You get the idea... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif lets have fun with this one.

You mentioned the T-Bird; how about the SC model? Pretty snappy car for a V6; I was dissappointed to see them go ('95?), but judging from the number sold no surprise.

Restoration and maintenance of future collectable cars might be a bit more difficult than in the past . Considering all the plastic and electronic parts....

The more collectable ones will probably be the stranger cars with the smallest production runs.

I keep waiting for Avanti to be recognized as collectable but that may never occur. Its been on several lists of "future collectables" but never seems to go up in value.

Buick Reatta from 87 to 91 has a chance at collectability but its lack of real performance status may hold it back.

Recent/current production vehicles:
Lincoln Blackwood pick up truck - short life, very few, very nice
Mazda Miata - given its long life and current popularity it will be next classic 2 seater in the same league as the Triumph TR6

the Chevy SSR is getting canned early, right vehicle (if it is a later 6.0 litre), wrong time. It has cult following thanks to alot of preproduction marketing, trouble is by the time it hit the streets sticker was low 40's, half a ton heavier than when the powerplant (5.3) was picked due to the convertible top hardware. Volumes seem right for collectability at about 17k/year.

As far as keeping higher tech cars running/complete, If their is a market, there will be entrepreneurs out there to keep car buffs happy.

I would consider the new volkswagen bug. I think that little car has a lot of style that you don't see on very many new cars.

Here is how I feel about collectible cars.

First, if those that can remember wanting the cars from their youth are at a point in their lives where they have the money to finally own one the market escalates . As those folks get too old the market begins to taper off. Take a look at cars that in the 60s and 70s were hot - cars from the 20s and 30s are beginning to taper off even cars from the 40s are softening. The folks that remember them are not as actively collecting and the market is easing off. Cars from the 50s, 60s and early 70s are red hot right now especially the pony cars.

Secondly, limited production units are more appealing, Homoligation cars(priced a pristine Superbird lately, or a Charger). 2 doors, convertibles, unusually equipped.

Finally, it is probably wise to buy on the pre-escalating side of interesting cars. Buying a project is often tough just because you can usually buy something pristine or restored for less than the cost to re-do it. I don't think we're is a particularly strong labor market but dealers here(Nashville, TN) are charging 80+/hr for labor.

Good luck and buy something you like.
