On the XU there is very little clearance between the gas tank cap and FEL frame. Is it the same on the XR? (Hard to tell from pictures, but it looks similar to mine). Not sure if this is a bad design or if I'm just ignorant of why this would at all be beneficial?
Good luck with your repair. If they were metal I'd be tempted to cut a used tank in half to see what kind of condition it is in. My father in law has tank rust from condensation in his decades old IH -- been keeping the fuel low intentionally due to a fuel pump leak.

Mine cracked at about the same place while it was still under warranty.
Replaced it over a year ago and haven't seen the dealer since.

When I purchased mine and went to pick it up from the dealer, I noticed the fuel tank leaking. It was cracked on top next to the filler cap, where a rubber line is connected. It looked like the hose clamp for the rubber line had been over tightened. They pulled a fuel tank from another tractor and had it replaced in less than an hour.

Mine cracked from the bottom where embedded nuts were installed to hold a skid plate (very poor design) and it was replaced under warranty with a different design. I repaired the cracks with JBWELD and it is still holding 5 years later. The replacement tank is in my shop taking up space awaiting the JBWELD to fail- so far no issues. Never had an issue with filler neck though.

Mine is cracked as well. Guess I need to hit the dealer up!!
I figured this was not an isolated issue. I think it's in the moulding design. Could be material.
