Hello, attached are a couple of pictures of my old Solenoid from an 2007 AGCO ST34 tractor, the plugs are the same, but the new wire colors are different coming out of the new plug. Is that OK? I bought the solenoid on ebay here: New Fuel Shut Off Shutoff Solenoid for Yanmar 12 VOLTS 1503ES-12A5UC5S | eBay

I also need to splice the new plug because the wires are too short. Should I keep the same wire colors as my old solinoid, or use the new plug colors orientation? Or does it matter? My old solenoid is a Woodward 1503ES from an AGCO ST34 tractor.

Does anyone know the pinout specs for the old solenoid? Can I verify anything with a multimeter, or 12V battery bench test?
I don't want to mess up the new Solinoid by just randomly connecting it to my existing tractor harness.
Please advise. Thank you. John in Montana

You can test the tractor harness with a test light. You will have one ground wire (usually black) one wire hot with key switch on, and one hot with starter engaged. Then do the same with the new solenoid, two jumper wires, and 12 volts. Ground one wire and apply 12 volts to one of the others. Keep trying that until you determine the pull (start) circuit. That will pull the rod in when 12 volts is applied. The hold (ignition "on") will keep the rod in while 12 volts is applied. With that circuit powered up you can manually push the rod in and it will stay in place until you remove the 12 volts. Once you know all that you can decide how to extent the wires.

How can I test the old solenoid? Will it automatically (should) move in when 12V is applied? If it is faulty it won't?

My tractor won't start at all, the starter just turns the engine over and over with no startup. It's like it's not getting fuel.
It did this out of the blue, one day running fine, next day no start at all.

Thanks for your help!

You can feel and hear if the solenoid is working. If needed you can just take it out and try to start the engine without it. If the solenoid is the problem it will start right up. You can reach in with your finger and shut it by pushing against whatever the rod contacts.

If I have the solenoid connected to the tractor, just hanging there, and turn the key to on, the rod should push in (get shorter) correct?

If the wiring is correct, yes as Harry stated the rod will retract with the first position of your key, on the next position (starter engaging) the hold circuit will keep the rod retracted until you turn the key to the off position.

Do you have a volt meter to try the test that Harry mentioned?

Yes, I have a volt meter. I just want to check the old solenoid to see if indeed that is the problem that the tractor won't start. I have not 100% determined that the old solenoid is bad.

Thanks for your help

No, just turning the key one position will NOT pull the rod in. The start circuit pulls it in, the ignition circuit holds it in. If you turn th key to on you can push the rod by hand and it should stay in until you turn the key off.

When you turn the key to the off position, is that how the tractor "turns off"?... The solenoid cuts fuel to the tractor by inserting the pin?

If I can start the tractor with the solenoid out of the tractor, you mentioned I could stick something in there and that would shut the tractor down?

Thanks

Yes. You can reach in with your finger and feel for a metal part. You can push it against slight spring pressure and it will move in away from the hole, then come back as you release pressure. You can use a tool of some sort if you like. I just use my finger.
