Fuel shut off valve dribbles. JD 2210

Hi,

I never realized that diesel fuel was so dirty. It was definitely time -or overdue- yesterday to change the fuel filter on my 10 year old 2210. It was BLACK, looked like someone added about a tablespoon of soil to the fuel. Anyways, I guess I forgot that the fuel shut off valve also leaked last time I changed the fuel filter but forgot about it after the job was done. (old age?) After removing the fuel bowl and filter the fuel continued to dribble out the valve. Is there any fix or do I change out the valve? Are these valve known for failures? Would it be better to operate the valve frequently?

On some if the valve you can take it apart. There is a o-ring that does the sealing. Sometimes dirt will get in the seat and not let It seal when you close the valve. It wouldn't hurt to open & close it from time to time

It would be a lot safer for your inj pump & injectors if you'd change the fuel filter more often therefore the cutoff might not dribble from extended non operation. According to parts schematic o-ring(parts key 25) can be replaced by removing screw(parts key 24)

I change the fuel filter annually, isn't that enough?
Forgot to ask if there is a trick to servicing this valve? I am worried about damaging the fuel line if I pinch it off. The alternative seems to be to drain the tank?

Your initial post sounded to me as if you hadn't changed filter in a loong time. Yes I think once a year is often enough. I think you won't harm line by pinching off just long enough to repair fuel cut-off.
