Hello folks. I am a newby so bear with me, all guidance appreciated.
I have a Farmall Super A / McCormick that I can't keep running. I can crank it with the choke pulled and it will idle, but try to take the choke off and/or add throttle it quits. Pull the choke give it a little throttle it cranks and runs at idle. I had a leaking sediment bowl that I could not stop so I replaced it with a new one, It appears to work like it should. I took the fuel line loose from the carb and there is a pretty good flow. Can someone describe how to tell if flow is sufficient? Carburators are not my strong suit and I know even less about govenors. Has anyone had siniliar issus or can anyone help?

Where the fuel line connects to the carb, there is usually a brass elbow. If you remove this elbow you will find a filter screen on the end of it. These like to plug up and cause problems like you describe.

I assume that you fuel is fresh and hasn't been sitting around a long time.

Stan

So if that was plugged, do you have the screen in the sediment bowl????

Glad your problem is solved. You might think about inserting a in-line fuel filter between the tank and the carb.

If you need the choke to idle and runin moderate ambient temperatures or on a warmed engine then either your mixture is too lean, or your spark is too weak. Check the spark first by removing the center wire from the distributor cap, holsing it nar a good ground and trying a start. You should see a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lightning. If it blue, or reddish blue or yellowish, you have a weak spark. The points may be burned corroded otr oily, or improperly set. If you have a FAR, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK , then go on to the carb and fuel system.

You say you have good fuel flow to the carb so lets assume that you are correct. The possible causes of too lean of a mixture are too low of a float setting (not that common) idle and main jet set too lean, or an air leak around the metering section of the carb (cracked or rusted intake manifold, leak around the throttle shaft on the carb, leak at the carb-manifold gasket interface, or leak at the manifold to cylinder head gasket. To fins the latter, with the engine running, spray starter fluid around these locations and when the engine speeds up, you've fund your leak. the way to fix the rest of the potential problems is self evident.
Do these check sytematically and you'll find the problem.

Thanks to all who responded to my post.

The new sediment bowl has a filter screen.:D

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say above the tap.

I have an in-line filter to install.:D

I did check the fire and decided it was fuel. The old Carter carburator appears to have been neglected. It may get a rebuild in the near future.

The tractor belonged to my wife's dad who passed a few years ago so the sentimental value to her "encourages" ;) me to keep it running. Maybe a restoration as I read and learn more from these forums.:confused2:

Thanks again and hopefully I can contribute in the future..
