VT365- You got it down, that's how we do it.
One thing....Make sure you test fit the new filter as well as the o-ring onto the bowl before you start.
Older machines usually need a fuel bowl.
The heat and fuel causes the bowl to shrink and the o-ring to grow.
the ring should fit pretty snuggly on the bowl and the filter should fit all the way to the bottom of the bowl.
Onto the procedure we use.
Turn off fuel.
Do your business, filter clean etc.
reinstall filter/bowl and o-ring.
Don't push the bowl up snug yet let it hang on the threaded collar.
Put catch pan under fuel bowl.
Turn fuel on.......cuss because fuel hangs on the side, misses the pan and lands on your shoe...

Hold rag under bowl....fuel runs down arm...back onto shoe.....

Ok, ok it's usually not that dramatic, BUT this is usually when the phone rings, back to what we were doing......
You can turn the fuel on just a little so that it doesn't fill real quick, this keeps the mess down nicely.
After the bowl fills completely and starts to dribble over top, tighten ring.
Wipe up everything tractor usually doesn't even hiccup when you do it this way.
