Front-end loader falls on car in intersection
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS-TV) - Columbia police are investigating after a bizarre incident left a tractor on top of a car Tuesday morning.
A front-end loader being transported on the back of a City of Columbia dump truck fell onto a car at the intersection of Harden St. and Calhoun St. sometime before 10:00 a.m.
It is unclear exactly what caused the tractor to fall onto the car.
The driver of the car says he is okay.
Traffic in the area was slow while crews cleaned up the mess.

City and State workers dont usually get in a hurry, but about the only way that accident can happen is he turned that corner way too fast for the top heavy load that he had. He just wasnt thinking about that as he slammed around that corner. Maybe he was a new hire that formerly drove private dump trucks paid by the load and was driving accordingly.

Looks to me like the truck was making a left hand turn. Load was leaning to the outside when the car ran the light, hit the trailer with just enouh force to tip the load towards them... lol, I really don't have a clue

Why would you think the car ran a light? Just because the light is red? Could have been green when the accident happened.

No....look at the pic. I clearly looks like the trailer wen on over with the tractor.

It looks like the car was turning left to go down the road the truck was coming from.

I agree that it looks like he was going a bit too fast for the load.

If you save the photo and zoom in on it, the trailer deck is still under the backhoe. So, it appears it was properly chained down.

The truck seems to have been turning left.

And, I don't know how the car could have gotten there, unless it was also turning left.

If the car hit the back of the truck, regardless of who was legally in the intersection, the car still has the responsibility to see and avoided the trailer.

Looks like everyone involved was in a hurry.

I looked again real close, and I see that the trailer is level and the loader front end rolled off the trailer. The back side may be chained. If it were chained down, the front wheels would still be on the trailer.

If the trailer were tilted up you would see more of the tongue area.

Looks like the Toyota tried to beat the truck in a turn situation and got slammed.

The loader front wheel is fwd on the tongue, definitely not on the trailer where it should be.

Perhaps you cannot see it as well as I can, but I promise you, I am positive I can see the deck of the trailer under the bucket, and it is parallel with the bucket.

Perhaps it was a tilt bed trailer, which would explain how the deck separated so easily from the frame.

Also note the truck driver was cited, but not for failing to secure his load.

Ray - I see the same thing. The trailer deck is tilted with the bucket of the machine. We can see the entire tongue and the bar at the end of the trailer deck.

I wonder if the trailer had a tire or two blow out? One way or another, one of them was n't supposed to be there at the time of the accident.

How about the truck is turning left going slow. The Camry (?), speeding, nips left around the truck, sees the trailer too late, locks the brakes. Camry rear catches trailer (hence RR damage). Impact plus top heavy load tips the TLB and trailer toward Camry. Which then spins right so its front end bangs the trailer. (Meanwhile truck has stopped. About 1.5 seconds.
I'm impressed with the chaining job. Fun to try figuring this out, and glad I wasn't driving, either. I hope someone posts the "how the accident happened".

My take on it, which is worth nothing but I'll give it any way, is that the truck is jacknifed with the trailer. There is no way, considering the damage to the car, that the car pushed the trailer to this position and then caused it to roll back against the forces of a side blow. I presume the truck stopped suddenly, though I don't see skid marks, and the trailer brakes were not working or working well. The trailer pushed the truck causing it to jacknife while at the same time the car, expecting the truck to clear, glanced the trailer at the same time the load was falling over. The load fell over due to the jacknife and torquing of the tongue on the pintle hitch.

What I am thinking is that the tilt-bed is off the trailer.

Looks like the backhoe & trailer bed tilted over and fell of somewhere behind the position they are in now.

The tractor was heavy enough that it trapped the car and dragged the car to the position shown. I don't believe the car was hit by the trailer in the spot where it is shown in the photo.

Reason is that if the truck, trailer and tractor were moving very fast there is no way they could stop where they are if the tractor tipped over due to excessive speed in a turn.
