Front deck mower gear box leaking

............. Cost estimates for bearings and seals isn't cheap and rebuild gear box is even less cheap and a new gear box is almost heart stopping. I'll report the results after I find out and pay the bill.:shocked::confused3: ......................

Sorry to hear this, I hope it is still rebuild-able.


Your F3080 deck gearbox may be different but the gearbox in F3060 (deck RC72R-F30 ) is US made and easy to overhaul 90 degree design.
It has standard off the shelve bearings and shaft oil seals.

I am sure rebuild shop can spend two hours rebuilding it if doing it for the first time.

I had no need to investigate if the gears or shafts are available directly through the US manufacturer (post #4 in this thread)?

Barlows (Gary) called today with good news and bad news. Gears in great condition and I think he said they'd do seals and bearings, that's good news. Bad news is i need a new gearbox at near $400. When my 4 bolts holding gear box fell out without me noticing it apparently reamed out the bottom of the gear box and that's why gear oil and "00" grease would not stay in the gear box after I replaced the lost bolts. Moral of the story, keep an eye on your mowing deck and notice any bolts with threads showing and missing bolts. Maybe take a picture of deck from time to time and compare pics and for sure be much more observant than me of your mowing deck.
I guess if it had just been a damaged gear box to deck seal the "00" grease would have worked.:ashamed::confused3: PS I will be using gear oil when I get it back and maybe a squirt of "00" grease. :laughing::laughing:

Sorry to hear of your issues but thank you very much for sharing them - I will be keeping a close eye on my gearbox now.

I plan to take a paint stick/marker and marking bolts on my two machines that way I can do a quick visual check to see if there has been any loosening.

Cold1313 that is a great idea, will do it to mine. Just washed it off after mowing at in laws, so now is the time to mark the bolts.

I like the marking idea.:thumbsup: I use a leaf blower after mowing to clean off my machine after previously using an extension wand on my air compressor hose. Leaf blower beats compressor hose by a mile or two.:2cents: I also have both of my deck/belt covers stored in the barn so I can see the top of the deck, belts and reach grease zerks easily and blow off all sticks and grass. Wife is convinced I'm messing up by leaving the covers off but that's her opinion.

Took my covers off several weeks ago, it is much easier to keep the deck clean. Also I bought a Milwaukee M18 grease gun, that is nice to use when greasing the kubotas. I noticed I really have to watch the fun wheels of the deck to keep them in grease. About every other week they are greased.

Picked up mowing deck today with new gearbox, seals and bearings and belt for $805. Said gears were fine and Thank the Lord for that!!! I will be more careful for awhile and maybe quit using it to mow trees and plow gullies. Averaged over the years and my aggressive mowing habits I guess the cost isn't horrible.:shocked:
