What happens when you try pouring that at say 20 degrees F ? I believe my Amsoil will flow at -50 F. Gear oil will be solid.

I had my gear oil used last year when it hit -20F, maybe only 0 in the barn. No issues with ANY of the fluids (although they are all synthetic).

No one questions that synthetic oil is better at extreme temps.

No 30w transmission oil, or 80/90w gear oil, is going to be thick enough to be a problem in that diff. at in there at 20F. Manufacturers would not allow either to be used in this application if it did. My manual, specifically says it's fine.

As I, and the other poster said, you can spend $3 more, and use synthetic gear oil if you are worried about it.
