This happened today wile removing dirt behind garage for addition.
Can someone post the diagram so I can start to disassemble this. Do I need any special tools to remove the seal?
Thanks for any help,
Bob

Hello RRiley
Sorry for your dilemma there.
Here is the JD parts breakdown. It doesn't look like you need anything special for disassembly. Hopefully it's just the seal (#2) or the gasket (#7) that went bad.

Good luck
Hope this helps

Greg, you can't link to JD parts since it requires a log-in.

Bob, here is the diagram Greg was linking to. You do know how to use JDparts correct?

Thanks so much glc24, and Kennyd. Had a big thunderstorm and was without power for a few hours.I was hopping I would be able to manage this without some sort of a press and special tools. Kennyd I downloaded your tutorial and until now I haven't needed parts. Go figure.
This place is so helpful. Thanks again,
Bob

I took this apart this AM. The seal doesn't look damaged but I will put a new one in since I have it all apart. Haven't tore the gasket off yet maybe it was the problem? Ill work on this when it cools off some this evening.
The diagram was a life saver.

I doubt it is the gasket. For that to be bad it would mean that the housing has to be loose. Is it? the seal is good that says something else. Either the bearing is bad or there is internal pressure building up.

My guess, and I've listened to a lot of guys here with this porblem, is that internal pressure pushed the oil out as the air in the housing heated up and expanded. On my new tractor coming I am going to make a venting system to keep the pressure from building. You might think about doing the same thing.

Good luck,
Rob

Hello Bob,
I would also make sure that the outer case isn't cracked.

For what its worth the gasket was not stuck at about an inch or so in one side when I cleaned it off today. Wouldn't you know I wiped everything clean when I disassembled it.
Never made a vent, that's a scary thought for me. I was working it hard with box blade and front loader with tooth bar when this happened.
I will inspect for cracks but it all looked good when I took it apart. Ill snag the wife's magnifying glass and check it as good as I can.
When I loosened the fill plug it was extremely tight and when I changed the fluids at 50 hrs I know I did not torque it 75 ft lbs. I guess I don't understand the pressure buildup.

Thanks for info,
Bob

As the gears turn friction creates heat. The gas (air) in the box expands and if it has no outlet it pushes gear oil out the seals until the pressure reduces enough that the seals once again prevent seepage.
