I'm late to the party here, but yes the range chips in the OBD2 port work great. Kind pricey for just that one feature though.

If I had such a truck, I would instead be buying an SCT BDX/X4 or diablo tuner and adding some horsepower and throttle response in addition to disabling the AFM/DFM. Plus getting more gauges and data from OBD2, ability to scan and clear DTCs, etc.

That pushrod is super bent! Crazy that the engine can keep running mostly fine with just a ticking noise.

I'll be the first with an almost unrelated, unhelpful post...

I had a 2013 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi. The same problem exists in them as well. On mine one of the on/off cylinder lifters failed and took out my cam as well as some other items. In my limited research I saw that the electronic disablers didn't completely cure the problem. The lifters can still fail since they are still able to collapse.

He got the truck back today. Quick turnaround, he took it in last Friday. The final bill was a little over $5400.

My 5.3 isn't high milage so maybe it doesn't count, but one of my friends bought one new some years ago and has over 300,000 trouble free miles on it. A second friend has one with over 8000 hours on it, many of them idling, and it also has not had ANY problems.

I suspect mine will be just fine too.

A few days ago I watched a video where he talked about the problems of the AFM on the 5.3 and 6.2 engines. He threw out a 3 to 4% failure rate. He said a normal failure rate for engines is less then 1%. So the AFM is roughly 4 times more likely to have a failure rate but 96% of the people still won’t have a problem.

Thats fast but dang that bill hurts quite a bit to get out of nowhere. Almost feel like you could swap a brand new crate motor for just an extra grand or two.

From SE Michigan in the middle of nowhere

There is no "middle of nowhere" in SE Michigan.

It's all relative, bud. There's plenty of rural areas in SE Michigan where you still have a drive a very long way to get some groceries or gas.

For example, here's many square miles with only a few dozen homesteads.

There was another suv there waiting for an engine swap. I think that’d cost more. I don’t know if the one waiting for a swap was an AFM problem or not.
