JD 4100 HST oil looks black after fresh filter, oil change and one mowing period. Is there another filter/reason oil becoming black.
1000 hrs/original owner/ oil changed every 50hrs/ same results w/different oil brands

:welcome:
It's a diesel, so is to be expected but no cause for concern.

You must be new to diesels. ;)

Im assuming your talking about the engine oil and not the HST oil. If its the engine oil it will generally always turn black. All my diesels do this. Ive been told that this is due to high detergents in the oil. Apparently this is necessary for the diesel engines.

Black just means the oil is doing it's job. ;)

Also, my manual specs oil changes every 200 hours. I used to replace my old JD's oil at 100 hour intervals (only did aprox 100 hrs a year). Ill probably change mine sooner than every 200 hours on the new one also, but not as little as every 50 hours. that would be too expensive

Thanks to all for the replies, thought threre might be a pcv filter or other crankcase ventilation contaminating oil.
