Freezers - Upright or Chest?

/ Freezers - Upright or Chest? #21
The above upright my folks gave me was in Ohio. The gift did not include transportation and installation at my house. THE NERVE! It went to Maryland lying flat in a trailer, probably laid down total of 48 hours (had to wait for help in getting it inside). Fairly well acclimated to 90 deg from its standard orientation. Got it inside, let it stand up for about a day before pluggin in, been running great for about a year.

/ Freezers - Upright or Chest? #22
We butcher our own beef and pork. Do lots of corn and beans. Have two chest style freezers (one is 18 cuft, the other is 24) and a 16 cubic foot upright. The upright seems to freeze the food faster, then we transfer to the chest freezers for long term storage. I found using milk crates (available from Wal Mart - and KMart) will stack nicely and allow for rotating food. Late summer when we are taking in from the garden they get stocked, then when we do hogs in January and usually a steer in early March, they get filled again.

The chest freezers seem to run less (use less electricity) but the uprights give you better access.
