I had the same thing happen to me with my new (16 hours now) TC40DA. I was going down a steep hill slowly in the lowest HST gear cutting with my finish mower and the front loader was in place. The tractor lost traction and skidded down the hill. I too had no need to panic as I have a level place at the bottom of the hill. I tried it again and it did the same thing. I just assumed that I was geared too low and when it lost traction, it just skidded down the hill. I have four skid marks to prove it! I also have R4's and felt that because they are directional, that is part of the reason for the slide. The tractor has no problem going UP the hill. I thought that next time, I would try it under power and not just letting the tractor creep down the hill. What do ya'll think?

Freewheeling and skidding are two different things. If your TC40DA skidded down the hill, then it was too steep for it to maintain traction. An HST will not freewheel unless there is a serious problem, however, many times I have skidded/slid down imbankments with all four wheels locked. jt7157's problem seems to that his tractor comes completely out of gear or acts as if the clutch has been pressed. I'm guessing that he got a little "light in the saddle" and his seat switch triggered the operator safety system. Unfortunately, on a hillside, that "safety" feature is more of a danger, or so it would seem.

The last couple of time's i parked the tractor and left it running when i got off the seat it didnt kill the engine. Maybe this is a small warantee item. If you get off the seat it's should to kill the engine if the brake is not set.

I have a TC55 with SSS not EHSS, The only time I have had the Engine die, is if the tractor is in gear and I get off of the Seat. I dont know if there is a Difference in the Seat Switch between EHSS and SSS ????

I have put the Tractor in Neutral and forgotten to set the Brake, gotten up and the annoying Buzzer will sound off , but the engine will continue running, with out the Brake Set.

I believe the Seat Switch will only kill the Engine if the Tractor is in Gear and someone gets out of the Seat.

It will let you get off and not engage the Brake and still allow the engine to run, the annoying buzzer is the Safety Feature that sounds off in that situation.

"New" tractor - I would have the dealer send someone to check this out immediately, as something is not right.

Maybe it is operator error, maybe not. If not -get it fixed ASAP.

I would not want to be freewheeling down any of my hills. Does the tractor break loose when in 2wd? in 2WD with rear diff locked? Is your MFWD lever engaged all the way?

My 40 used to kill the engine when out of the seat and no brake set .The book on my 55 said the same thing that it would shut down the engine with the alarm when out of the seat.Ill ask the dealer when i get time.It would be bad to freewheel with a load of hay. What happens when most of the other tc tractor owner's standup out of the seat does the tractor shut down?

Please post back when you get confirmation from the Dealler as to what is SUPPOSED to happen when out of the seat. Either with P Brake engaged and not engaged.

Thanks

I have a hill that I will slide down if I do not raise my cutter up to get it's weight onto the rear wheels. If I just let it float then it is fun time until the bottom of the hill. It was pretty scary the first time that it happened.

I will when i find out .I just know it shouldnt go out of gear on hill's for saftey reason's.I guess if it shut the engine down it would be just as bad though. The hydraulic clutch pak wouldnt have any presure to hold the tractor either.

Thank's

In the book it said if the operator leaves the seat with the key in on position or the tractor is running when returning to the seat the inching pedal must be fully depressed to allow the transmission to operate page 2-15. I guess that would be while moving or setting still. I also found the answer in the book and your right if the shuttle is in neutral it will run with the brake off you do get the alarm on page 2-6. I recommend everyone check this out for thereself for saftey reason's this is important stuff. My dad always said know your equipment he was right.

Thank's

Maybe someone already said this, but are you sure your 4-wheel drive in engaging properly? Your trouble sounds a whole like the two times I've neglected to make sure I was in 4WD on a hill and I had some weight in the loader and nothing on the back end. The front freewheels down the hill while the back end skids. Many people would learn the first time. It's has taken me twice (so far).
