litnin said:I had the same thing happen to me with my new (16 hours now) TC40DA. I was going down a steep hill slowly in the lowest HST gear cutting with my finish mower and the front loader was in place. The tractor lost traction and skidded down the hill. I too had no need to panic as I have a level place at the bottom of the hill. I tried it again and it did the same thing. I just assumed that I was geared too low and when it lost traction, it just skidded down the hill. I have four skid marks to prove it! I also have R4's and felt that because they are directional, that is part of the reason for the slide. The tractor has no problem going UP the hill. I thought that next time, I would try it under power and not just letting the tractor creep down the hill. What do ya'll think?
Freewheeling and skidding are two different things. If your TC40DA skidded down the hill, then it was too steep for it to maintain traction. An HST will not freewheel unless there is a serious problem, however, many times I have skidded/slid down imbankments with all four wheels locked. jt7157's problem seems to that his tractor comes completely out of gear or acts as if the clutch has been pressed. I'm guessing that he got a little "light in the saddle" and his seat switch triggered the operator safety system. Unfortunately, on a hillside, that "safety" feature is more of a danger, or so it would seem.
