Hi guys.

I have the opportunity to get lots of free lime from one of the citys thats close by.

I am told they use it as when the water comes out of there pump station it first
gos in to a lime then off to the other treatments.

So is it worth getting or should I do a soil test first.

Also could it be used on a road or for filling in holes around here?

Thanks Ron.

Mornin Ron,
If its free and you have acidic soil then its worth it to get some ! Find anyone with a bunch of oaks on their property and they would be glad to help take some of it off your hands ! ;)

Or someone with fir and pine trees that they want to grow grass under. hte shed needles make the soil acidic and the grass dosn'r row well. put down a little lime and the grass perks right up:) the lime I have experience with would not be good road filler, it is like fine sand when groke up.

You should get a soil test, first. Why put down something that you may not need?

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like you're talking about lime cake, or wastewater treatment sludge, as opposed to lime. I know that around here treatment plants are always looking for someone to take this off their hands. Lots of issues involved with accepting this material. I would definitely do some research first.

Also, remember that it's a lot harder to reduce ph in an overlimed soil than to increase ph in an acidic soil, so I would definitely apply lime only after a soil test to determine the proper rate.

i got the impresion he was talking about FRESH water treatment... as you pump it OUT of the ground... not effluent treatment...

i thought that was a simple as add horse manure..... (the more raw, the better for changing PH which is why you normally want to compost it for a bit before hand)

Lime is used to take the rust out of the water.

I have very acidic soil due to all of the fir and cedar trees on my property.

Just as a side note, when I was remodeling my shop, I took all of the drywall (gypsum board) and tilled it into the lawn and garden areas. Didn't have any paint on it, and I don't know how that would affect things, but the new lawn turned out great, and it is a cheap source for fertilizer.
