Don't believe anything you hear about FREE LAND in Montana. There isn't any. Figure parcels of land for farming from about $1,000 per acre and up and that is for just bare land.

Parts of Montana are very cold, others are not. We live in the rain shadow of the Rockies, and the snow mostly skips over us. Hits in the mountains to the West, and stops again hitting when it gets out onto the plains. Rarely gets down to 0 degrees, and most of the time in the winter is in the 40s and 50s.

If you want to farm here, bring plenty of money to buy the farm and set it up. If you buy a fully developed one with irrigation about $2,000 to $3,000 an acre for anything I would consider a decent farm plus value of buildings and improvements. We live in a small town, and a 5 acre level home site (ours is across street from city limits) like we have is worth about $129,000 for just the land and you have to bring in utilities, septic tanks, etc.

That's why all the truckers and allot of the locals have covers over their radiators. It's impossible for an engine to get to operating temps in that kind of cold.
