The last 3 weeks has been like Christmas! First a deal on a 3-point back-hoe. Got a major bargain on a 'Dozer at the same time. Someone gave me an old John Deere 430 2 cylinder last week. (It belonged to a friend of my father) We made an offer on a farm I've had my eye on, and found out friday that the offer has been accepted. (This wasn't free, but a prayer answered none-the-less)

Then the phone rings last night. "Can you come by and look at a stack of lumber we need moved"? (Old family friend....)

I drive by on the way to work this morning. The "stack of lumber" was put there by the grandfather of the current owner of the barn where it's sitting (in their way).

"You can have it if you'll just haul it off" she says. "We don't want it, and it's in our way". (They want to use the barn for a garage this winter)

The "stack" is covered in plastic. I had no clue what it was. Being the all-round nice guy that I am. I agree to haul it off for them.

So, what is it?????

When I raised the plastic, my heart skipped a beat. I haven't figured out the "board feet" yet, but it's 4/4, random width, from 6" to 16", random legnth, 12' to 16', kiln dried WHITE OAK, S2S (Sanded 2 sides) The old timer that it originally belonged to was a cabinet maker. From what I was told, he stacked the lumber there about 10 years back. The stack is about 4' wide, and close to 8' tall. In other words.... A BUNCH OF LUMBER!

Now what do I want to build with all of this?????

Lucky SOB. Sounds like half a new barn fell right into your lap. Or at least a nice size shed maybe to store the dozer in?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tried to estimate the board feet. My "number" came up as 5376', so I'm gonna guess around 5000' (+ or -) This is cabinet stock.... BUT. I'm about to build a couple new hay wagons. This would be about the slickest looking hay rack in the field! A friend just contacted me, saying "SELL IT". Says it has mega value! Not sure at this moment just what I'll do with it.

Flooring and cabinets for the new farmhouse.

Around here, that ~5000 board feet of S2S White Oak, including wider boards, would run about $12,000.

That's a heck of a lot of Mission furniture!

My son (age 9) loves to fish. he would really like a 14-16' deep "V" fishing boat & trailer. Could we come & stay with you a few days ?? I'm sure someone would give us one by then !! (we'll bring our own food).......as I wouldn't want to impose too much on you since someone will be bringing you 1/2 a beef soon..........Tom

Indydirtfarmer,

Are you going to tell your "old family friend" the value of this stack of lumber?

If I sell it, I'll split the proceeds with her. That's why we're OLD FRIENDS......

Forget the lumber, I want the JD.....no...no....I'll take the dozer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually I was looking at some red oak and couldn't believe the price; white shocked me more. I'd bet that stack of lumber is in the same ball park value as your dozer.

You book that flight to Vegas yet?! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The right thing to do. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif And, treating people right is likely why you have all this "luck" to begin with......

Of course, if I could just find a little luck to "prime the pump" with, just maybe someday I could be a rich man like you! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
