What is a frail mower? I found one on an ebay auction and I was wondering what it is good for? It's a "MOTT 8 FT FRAIL MOWER".

It's FLAIL as mentioned. And those are pillow block bearings, also previously mentioned.

All joking aside, Mott is the Cadillac of flail mowers. (Although that particular "caddy" has seen a few rough miles)

They are great mowers for SOME applications. They cut like a finish mower if the knives are sharp. They don't launch rocks and stuff nearly as bad as a bush hog. And being shorter than a bush hog of the same width, they handle better on the rear of a lighter tractor.

Down side? There's a LOT of knives to replace when they get dull. And they aren't cheap to replace. Flail mowers don't USUALLY like tall weeds. They tend to wrap up around the cutter shaft.

You'll find a lot of flail mowers in use by school systems, highway depts, and anywhere there needs to be NO flying objects typical of cutting with a bush hog.

And don't be at all suprised to see me bidding on that baby!

I have one designed for use behind an ATV or lawn tractor. It has its own 11 HP Honda engine on it since there's no PTO. Its an Alamo built by Mott -- virtually the only brand you see mowing along the roadside. It is rock solid with very heavy duty steel and components. It does a great job on a big lawn or well kept field but it doesn't like tall weeds -- they make special aftermarket blades for that.

If it stays "cheap" towards the end of bidding, I might jump in. If It sells cheap, it'll sell to me. I've been looking for a deal on one for a while. (I'm not saying what "cheap" is just yet!) If I do buy it, looks like me and the wife'll be making a weekend trip. That's about 9 hours (one way) for me. Gotta figure fuel cost and overnight motel in the price. Hmmmm. Better sell REAL cheap!
