I had part of the fron snow plow of off my 1 ton dump truck. Being a hoarder I saved it and sure enough along came a use. I have a buddy that had his tractor go down. He needed a way to put in his garden and and gfrade his drive while his parts were comming in. We built a 2 wheel cart with a set of 3 point arms and used the lift and frame to run it. It worked great he still uses it to pull his hay spear down the road now in the winter behnd his truck.

Don't think the ram is long enough to run a dump anything....

Au contriare, mon fraire. I'm sure he could use it on this "dump truck:" ;)
20 Cubic Ft. Heavy Duty ATV/Garden Tractor Dump Trailer

David, just be sure to post pics. :D

Aye Aye Bigfoot!

I've been trying to figure out the angle to increase he angle of the dump using a short shaft (some kind of offset that magnifies the effect).

But who am I kidding. I can't even WELD Yet! Mega-Noob here...

I'll tell ya' one thing, once you get a welder you'll never know how you survived without it. Plus sticking metal together is just plain fun.

Decide if you are "keeping this for fun" or "keeping this for a serious project." You are less likely to get too much time and money in it if you know it is just for "fun." The "serious projects" like this sometimes end up costing more than they are worth by the time you deal with all the unexpected problems. Its called stepping over a dollar to save a dime.

I could be wrong here, but it looks like a SA cylinder that is powered in RETRACT only.

IMO, that really limits what you can do with it. If it were a push/extend under power cylinder, I would probabally hold on to it.

With that said, I think I would sell it. It doesnt appear that the rod is in great shape anyway, and probabally will either drip/leak, or need rebuilt soon. And who knows about the pump unit. I would probabally hold onto that IF it is 12v and works. That way, if you ever have the need, you already have the powersource, because those things run $500+ new. But the cylinder, odds are it wont be the right size anyway IF and WHEN you ever have a need for one.

Great find. A 12V pump is not a cheap item to purchase new and I agree with LD1. It appears to be a SA cylinder and if it is, it is definitely Retract/pull only. I don't necessarily agree with getting rid of it without checking it out first though. Clean the unit up, check it for a spec plate or stamping and see what info you can find on it. Hook it to some power and see how functional everything is.

Another use might be for a round bale spear on the back of a pickup. I have several coworkers that have similar setups that attach to their fifth wheel balls and they use them for feeding. I guess they feel it's quicker and more comfortable than grabbing a bail with the tractor and hauling it out to the field. A few designs use a winch to lift the spear but the majority are hydraulic and a SA cylinder is all you really need. Although many use 2 way cylinders, the pull function is what all the designs I have seen use to lift the bale anyway.

They hydraulics are definitely the most expensive components of the design. I guy with a welder, the hyd unit and some scrap could easily build a $1200 unit for next to nothing.
