After asking TBN members as to what that hyd pump was under the platform I began to put 2 and 2 together. I've had this tractor for all of 3 hours. Bought it used with 36 hrs. Whenever I would start it cold it would make this hydraulic whine shutter, water hammer, noise from the area of this pump. The Hyd filter is mounted just on the inlet side of this pump. The loader also had a jerky spot if you did a high speed raise and lower which I thought was just low fluid so I added 2 gals the other day. Its just over the full mark on the stick now so it should have had enough. I made sure it wasn't just my imagination yesterday by having all implements and loader on the ground when I started it. It was real. Today I checked the filter before starting and it was very easy to put a quarter turn on by hand. When I started it, things sounded like a different tractor. No whine, and the loader bump is gone. I hope there is no permanent damage. I guess it was sucking air. I'll change the filter at 50 hrs and check things further.

Your symptoms sounded like a pump sucking air and you found the cause. I doubt you did any damage. Just screw the filte ron tight.
