Long time since I posted but my 15 yo Foton 404 keeps chugging away. As most owners will know, they're not without their issues however. A few years ago, the cross slider coupling (that connects the hydraulic pump to the engine gear train) failed. I made one and also bought another as a spare from Tommy at Affordable. Today the other one failed. The one that drives the power steering pump. I fitted the spare one I had - took about an hour - and am going again. Strange that these couplings fail as they do. I realise that they are there to allow a little misalignment but the relief valves are what should be protecting the gear train. Seems these things are deliberately weak (at least the OEM - fitted ones are).
So, my post may be redundant but if anyone's tractor of this type with two gear pumps driving 'nose to nose', suddenly loses hydraulic pressure or loses power assisted steering, check that these little couplings haven't gone out to lunch. I'll be keeping a spare one just in case.
