Glad my thread's not dead. Thanks for the replies.
Ironically, we did the first part of our homestudy yesterday. Simple enough.
We've tried having kids of our own and now we're old enough that we'd need to beat some serious odds working against us. And that's ok.
We're not trying to have the child we never had. We're looking to help a child or two overcome and cope with their trauma so they will one day be the kind of adult that we'd like to spend time with.
If I earn the title "Dad" during that process, great! If not, I'll still know that we gave our all towards helping a child.
Sounds like your coming at it from the right approach. My wife was instrumental in getting us started with foster care. She taught second grade and had several foster kids come through her classes. Not all were in good homes. She wanted them all to move in with us, but all we could do was sign up and take on some of our own.
I'm glad that I listened to her and decided to let these kids into our lives. I would do it again too.
Some things to keep in perspective are that even when they are calling you dad they are still the children of the state, and government actions happen very SLOOOOWLY.......This may seem obvious now, but gets harder to understand after you become a new foster parent.
