For you who have a Ford SOS tranny .... or access to a owners manual that shows the information..... I'm looking for the speed of the tranmission gears. As in, how fast was each gear rated at a given RPM. I'd like to know how fast the first five gears were rated in MPH. The model that I'm interested in is the SOS equiped 3000/4000 series.

Some mind wonder why.... its for my Ford tractor powered grape harvester (in another thread). I'm doing a "what if" research. It's a known fact that parts for the SOS trannys are getting less and less.

According to the Ford 4630 IT manual, there was a "constant mesh" tranny (stickshift) 8 forward, 2 reverse- that had a "creaper gear" option. The local dealer said that the one's with the creaper could go as slow as 1/2 MPH. The old SOS tranny goes really slow in the 'low' gears.

I'm thinking of a backup plan for a replacment for the SOS....

Ok.. according to my SOS master chart on the 3000 ( 4000 same )

This is at 1000 eng rpm, and is a linear ratio.. I.E. 1mp at 1000rpm = 1.5 mph at 1500 rpm, and 2mph at 2000 rpm.. etc.

1 .5
2 .2
3 .8
4 1.1
5 1.8
6 2.3
7 2.7
8 3.4
9 5.5
10 8.2
R1 1.6
R2 2.3

Hope that helps.

By the way.. the 8x2 tranny that I think that you are lookin at is as follows:

1000 rpm / mph

1 .8
2 .9
3 1.7
4 2.3
5 2.7
6 3.3
7 5.9
8 8.0
RL 1.1
RH 3.9

Thanks Soundguy.....

Ummmm....2nd gear is slower then 1st? Or did you mean that 1st- .2 and 2nd -.5

Yup, the info helps. I would imagine that the 8x2 tranny w/ the creeper is in the same slow speed. I can always ask the dealer for a copy of the page of a 4630 8x2 w/ creeper to see the speeds.

The question would be, would a 4630 8x2 w/ creeper fit in my 3000 w/ SOS rear end.... I've seen Ebay ads when the sell a gear tranny that it can swap into an SOS.....

Deffinately a typo on my part.. however the typo is on the 2nd range... 1 is deffinately .5 I'll repost (2) when i get off work. My guess is .6.. etc.

AFAIK, it is very common to swap gear trannies into the sos units.. A local tractor mechanic said he swapped an 8x2 gear into a 5000 sos he had come in.

I can't help you with the 4630 to 3000 swapover. The 3000/4000 had similar or 'same' sos.. but not sure how the rear end on a X6X00 is for mating.

I have seen a 5600 rear mated to a 5000.. again.. that wasn't an XX30 though. Hopefully you will be lucky and it will be a 'drop in, if you need it. Are the dealership mechanics checking this for you?

No, just a backup to the backup plan. I'm not sure how they do the PTO though. Looking at the 3000/4000 book, the SOS tranny is where the PTO clutch packs are. While on the 4630's (later ones at least), the clutch pack is in the rear end and the tranny just transmits the power to it. I'd have to convert the back end of the 3000 to the same type of PTO on/off that came w/ factory 8x2's.... Or just find a back end at a salvage yard.....

That's probably the easiest.

2nd range on the SOS is .7
