Ford New Holland 1920 PTO hard to engage

I have a 2000 year model Ford New Holland 1920 compact tractor with about 1600 hours. It's equipped with 3 speed manual transmission and 4 speed transaxle with two stage clutch. The PTO has been getting hard to engage. If you idle tractor all the way down, wait a few minutes and press the clutch pedal as hard as you can it will engage fairly easy and quiet.

Any ideas? Some kind of relatively inexpensive adjustment or break the tractor and install new clutches?

I had a Ford 1700 with a very similar problem. I had to hold the clutch in for 15-30 seconds to get a smooth pto engagement. From what I surmised it was to give the gearing time to spin down. I adjusted the clutch and the problem was corrected.

If the tractor has a double clutch (live PTO) then the clutch could need adjusted, or the clutch is bad and needs replaced. I do not know if the little fords had an inspection cover for the clutches or if the tractor would need split.

Clutch adjustment was the fix. Found instructions in (of all places) the owner's manual. Sheesh, sorry......Thanks ken
