Ford Jubilee Shift Problems

I forgot to ask, what does the spring and ball look like? Is the ball shiney or is it pitted?
Tractor Tech, that is a real good observation on that detent ball ! For me, that goes right to the head of the list of possible hard shifting culprits - especially since the ball won't come out. I wonder if it is even rotating? We know it has to be able to move very freely up and down enough for the shaft to slide....

Darned if I can think of how to get it out of the hole... but the fact that it won't come out easily makes me real suspicious about that detent ball and the shifter shaft.

I was thinking that Hank might try filing that detent hole half full of a good grease - maybe a sticky moly grease - and then see if the hydraulic pressure from a bolt or rod would force grease around that ball.
But then I got to wondering if he did that it could force grease along the shaft and into the empty space in the case that the shaft has to slide into - which could hydro-lock the shaft completely if that space is not vented - and that is something I don't know.

I wonder how much work it is to get the rod out?

The ball is not shiny, but it does not look pitted either, It looks very dull as opposed to shiny.

What if the slide rail was loosened from that thing it connects to and pushed toward the front of the tractor? Would that allow it to be tapped up from underneath?

You could loosen the shift fork from the shaft and slide it forward. I would hold the ball in the bore with a magnet, as at this point, it can fall out of the shaft bore into the transmission or the rear end. Tricky situation, but really the practical way to remove the ball and clean if you really feel it is necessary.

If the ball is not pitted, I would do what rScotty suggests and force grease into the hole and see if you can retrieve. If not, you cleanse the bore and ball of rust while lubing both.

They are not synchro have to stop to shift or match engine speed with trans I put synthetic in everything I own. repairs cost way more that oil
I had 10k hours on tractor no leaks or repairs on transmission or brakes

Keep in mind that while the tractor might stop when you press the pedal, the clutch can still be engaged enough to make it hard to shift. It's just no engaged enough to move the weight of the tractor. Been there. I would do some adjustment to the clutch linkage, if possible, to make sure it is completely disengaged when the pedal is pressed.

Since you have a Jubilee, I assume it is a 1953 model. If the transmission is similar to my 1952 8N, you cannot change gears on the go. You have to start off in the gear you want. My owner's manual is clear about that for the 8N.

Thank you, that is what I do.
