Ford 3500 industrial
Hey all, i've looked around this site for years but finally decided to register now that I have a tractor. Nh told me it is a 69 3500 industrial. It has a front end loader on it and a gannon box on the back. My dad an I got this thing running after sitting for 10 years, pulled the side cover off the pump and got the rack freed up on it and it runs decent now. I want to keep up with all fluid levels and i'm perplexed about a few things. We changed engine oil before we started it. No biggie. Injection pump was full of fuel, but no oil, have a new transfer pump to put on to see if that's where it comes from before I pull the injection pump off and send it in for barrels and plungers. We pulled the shift cover off since the previous owner said it was literally missing a gear, I guess someone he loaned it to broke it, so he had someone pull it out. Found the shift fork for 2/4 was out of place and not spread enough. Fixed that, got 1/3 freed up so it would go into gear, but have no 2/4 at all. I see that there is a sight plug on the side of the trans, I figured fill till it runs out and throw the plug in. Found power steering reservoir and filled it with 134d. Front end loader has a reservoir built into left vertical frame, but how full should it be and what position should the bucket be in? Should the fill plug on this be vented? Looks like there is a spill plug on the right side of the rear end with a fill plug on the top right rear of it? What position should the scraper be in when I check this? Any screens that need cleaned hiding anywhere? I found the hydraulic filter in the front behind the grill, don't know what it's for but figured I'd change it. Still has a fomoco filter on it. And the big mystery for me, what do I do for the torque converter? Do I check oil on it somewhere? Does it have a reservoir just for it or sealed unit or what? Not sure what it is since it doesn't have an automatic trans like automotive does. I'm a diesel mechanic, but ag equipment is not my area of expertise at all. Sorry for the long post, I plan on getting a service manual, but I need to use this thing this weekend and don't want to neglect it in my haste of putting it to work. Thanks for any help.

Welcome. Sounds like the tractor is salvageable. Injection pump is filled with fuel because, most likely, the oil was never changed in it. Drain it and fill it with 30 wt. to the check plug on side about halfway.
The loader fill plug should be vented and, if I remember, had a dipstick. Fill about 8" from top. There is a filter bolted to the base plate/return on the LH loader column.
You took care of the torque converter when you filled the transmission with oil. The filter in front of the radiator is for the transmission/torque converter/shuttle. The check plugs both on the transmission and rear end should have been 1/4" pipe plugs.
Check oil levels with the engine off, the loader and scraper on the ground.
On the steering cylinder, there are (or should be) 2 rubber covers. There is a grease zerk in those to lube the ball pins. Maybe not right now, but you should at least check the oil in the steering gearbox through a plug in the top. At some point, you can take the RH side cover of the box off, flush it out and fill with 90 wt.

Thanks for the welcome and all the info! I figured the plug for the loader should be vented. I'll throw a 90 degree hose barb and some hose on it to vent. I'm under the assumption that the trans, rearend, and loader all take 134d? The check plugs I was looking at were 1/4". I remember one boot on the cylinder, I tried to grease a couple zerks on this thing, looks like i need to get a handful and just start replacing them. Most won't take grease. I'll dig into it and do everything you recommended. Thank you so much for your help.

134D will work for everything, but engine and steering box.
Go to the New Holland website:
http://partstore.agriculture.newholland.com/us/
for the parts diagrams. Tractor is 3500, of course, while the loader is a model 735.
You can find some reference pictures for the Gannon scraper and top and tilt, but Woods company has current parts and pictures.

This is my first post, so if I was supposed to start a fresh thread, then I apologize. I just purchased a 1973? Ford 3550 and I'm what most of you would probably consider very green when it comes to mechanical repair. Please forgive my lack of proper terminology. I have some know-how but mostly I just have the willingness to try.

For the most part the machine seems to run well, but I've got some hydraulic problem. The backhoe will, over a few minutes, slowly dip and finally rest on the ground. I can't find any leaks in the hoses to the hoe. The loader has a leak around one of the chrome pistons leading to it. If this is not clear enough, I can grab a picture and post it. Could this leak at the loader end cause the backhoe to slowly lose pressure?

Also, whats the best way to touch up the rust spots? Sand and prime first then paint, or just sand and paint?

Welcome. A new post would be proper as it would have a unique thread to search for you or your 3550.
Anyway, no the leak in the backhoe and loader are not related. The backhoe lift or boom cylinder is leaking internally. Both cylinders will have to be removed and repacked.
As far as the rust, the best is to sand, prime and paint.

Thanks tractortech. Got the gearbox oils changed, breather put on, injection pump flushed and filled, water pump changed. Just blew a hose on the ripper and looks like I have a generator light on now. Getting closer though. Thanks for all the help.

Changed the hose on the ripper, generator light was simple too. I actually looked at what cable was what when i pulled the battery out and had hooked it up as a negative ground system. Back to positive ground now and it's all good. Seems to be working good now, need to get the brakes adjusted up, can hardly get it to stop in gear.

I have a question about finding a part for my 3500 Industrial Ford. I had the Hydraulic Pump go out. Can't seem to find a new one and the seal kit that I had put in is not holding. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Are you refering to thevthe loader pump in front or the pump for the rear hydraulics mounted on the LH rear of the engine?
