A non owner here...getting ready for 10 ac that I have to cut pasture and landscape. I have been looking around at Kubotas in the 20-30 hp range and seeing mostly scams. Well a fella on an outdoor website saw me asking around and offered his Dads(and Granddads) 1962 Ford Dexta w/ box/hog for $2700.
I really think I will need a FEL... He say he doesn't really care to keep it or sell, but a fella approached him some time back to buy and then never showed up so he thought he would offer.
He says it's strong. But...no FEL. I imagine it is not easy task buying/fitting/plumbing one.
The land is not very hilly or wet, just slap full of trees. I want to leave as much as possible to possibly hunt the back.
Is the Dexta dexterous? I hear everyone say get the next size up if you can, but having not operated or seen one in person I have no Idea of the maneuverability. I don't mind spinning wrenches to a degree....but should I keep on looking?...I think I just talked myself out of it! BUT MAN I like saving money...
Thanks in advance

the dexta will be decently maneuverable.. it's a smallish form tractor in the rough size range of a ford 8n, 00/01 series or a mf 35/135. the downside is the 'son' on the back of the 'ford'.. meaning parts come by boat...

I have no doubt that it will be strong enough to grub around.. but if it were me.. I'd find a for 800 or 801 series.. preferably with power steering and a good 2 posts DA loader.. say 4 spd ok.. 5 spd non live pto ok.. 5 spd live pto best ( *6* ) ie.. 861/860.

that should be able to be found in about the same money range.. ie.. 3000$ i just missed a nice 841 with ps and hd laoder in my neck of the woods for like 2995$ wished I would have jumped on it the day I saw it instead of waiting a couple days.

the 8xx will be nice and strong at 45 pto hp or so... alternately, a newer 3 cyl 3000 would do.. but have a lil less guts... ultimately, a 4000 3 cyl would make a better laoder than either due tot he front axle arangement.. but then.. you are creeping into a larger tractor and a good deal more money.

parts for the ford 00/01/000 are in good supply and they are decently easy to work on...

SG I'm familiar w/ Perkins to a degree...Marine anyhow. I once rebuilt a 4-107 in the back of my F150 in downtown Savannah under a street light!
I assume you mean Hydraulic when you say hd? (new jargon!)
DA=?
I may have a line on 2 rigs, a JD and a Kubota both w/ FEL and Backhoe...I not not what size or $$ but I'm waiting for the call now.

Ergon I have been looking a Craigslist from Savannah inland 100 miles...all the way to my soon to be new home in Rougemont NC and CL has many...but When the same rig shows up as being in 3-4 different locations....at what looks to be a good price... I saw a 06' L2000 series w/ fel and bush hog...on a nice trailer for 5K... I'm learning to smell fish on tractors!

hd heavy duty

DA dual acting as in hyd dump and curl, and not something like a trip loader..

knowing how to rebuild is half the battle.. the other half is ACTUALLY locating parts for an english tractor, stateside.

you can run to TSC ang get ford parts.. dexta? no.. ;)

So you are looking at basically one tractor?:)

ebay and a few of the other for sale sites have had a spate of scam sales adds come up here recently.. usually a low hour fairly new model with goodies at fire sale prices.. and some chump change story about a soldier being deployed and needed to sell it.. etc..
