i wouldn't worry about loctite on the stud. if it's a non blind hole, add thread pucky and double nut and screw in. clamping force will be attained by the studnut.

Studs are not "torqued. Studs should be screwed into the block until just finger tight and the nuts should be torqued to 50-55 lb-ft.

Bolts are screwed into the block and torqued to 65-70 lb-ft.

Studs are 7/16 diameter and 3 inchs long i believe one side is 7/16-14 and the other 7/16 - 20 ( going by memory.. it's been a while since i pulled a head.. but that seems to be what i remember )

14 is coarse and goes into the block.

8n6065a is the bolt number from NH.... NH no longer has the studs.... napa will generically carry studs that fit the measurements i gave you.

I got the replacement studs and nuts from Napa for a good price. Got them installed and ran the tractor with the hose in the radiator flushing for about 20 minutes. Then I noticed that the oil was still present at the top of the radiator after and remembered that my step father suggested using detergent to loosen the surface tension and ensure it is flushed out. I added about 2oz detergent and ran it for a minute and then have let it sit for two days. I plan to finish the flush tonight.

I was also told that after a certain period of time I need to retighten the head nuts. How long do I need to run it before I retighten them, and should I do it while the engine is hot or cold?

after you warm the engine it's a good idea to retorque the studs.

heck I do it a couple times.

when warm, then when cool.

some gasket sets say it is not needed.. I usually 'check' them anyway.

ps. oil in the water isn't an engine killer.. water inthe oil is the bad guy.

so during your observations. keep an eye on the oil.

in reality. with open rad and no pressure.. you likely will not get water in the oil even if there was a leak, as oil pressure exceedes water pressure in the block, and there is no oil in the head.

once you slap the cap on and let it pressurize, then you will see if you are getting water in the oil.

if no water int he oil and only getting some minor leak by the gasket at the head. try something like spray copepr coat.

some people even used indian head

or avaiation FAG on the soft gaskets.

What's the easiest way to check for water in the oil?

visual. water+oil=milkshake / emulsion.. etc.

keep her on straight water not coolant till you know if she leaks.

water in oil is bad. coolant in oil will destroy bearings fast.. way faster than oil in water alone.
