Ford 981 charge indicator light won't go out

I have a 1962 ford 981 gasser that the charge indicator light won't go out on even when the key is off. I charged the battery today and found that while charging the generator was hot to the touch even though the key was off, what could be causing this? Is it possible for the current to straight to the generator without going through the ignition switch and if so what would cause that?
