Ford 800 boiling gas in tank

Anybody ever heard of a Ford 800 tractor boiling gas in the tank? The tractor starts to surge under a bush hog load and worse when hot. If it is not dropped back to idle it dies. You can see and hear gas boiling in the tank.

Thanks for the reply. Don't know about the heat shields. It was purchased used, so I have no knowledge of what might supposed to be there. I am also not sure that the exhaust is routed as originally installed. I cannot tell if it has been re-routed or not. I assume the timing is set correctly. It only acts up when under a load of bush hogging. Otherwise, pushing snow, grading etc. it is fine.

In addition to timing, running a hair lean can make it get hot too.

As for you not knowing what it does or doesn't have, post a pic of the left side of the engine.

Or setup is the muffler elbowing off the back of the exhaust Manny, then laying parallel and above the Manny, with exhaust pipe coming out at the front of the tractor, going down. Then angling back under tractor.

The gas tank supports atop the head hop the vertical and horizontal heat shields that deflect muffler he's from the tank, which is very, very close.

If the unit is getting hot enough to boil the gas in the gas tank, it is also boiling the oil in the engine. It sounds like you have a serious cooling problem. What temperature is being show on the temperature gauge? Does it have a gauge or a idiot light? has someone disconnected the heat sensor? is the fan spinning when the engine is running? With the engine off see if the fan will spin freely when turn or is the fan belt tight enough to hold it? Does the unit have the original water pump and the impellers on the pump have eroded off over the years.

My suggestion would be to solve the heat problem before continuing with using the unit or you are shorty, if not already going to have a serious problem.

Here's my 950, same basic setup but mine is a rowcrop trike

Notice above the manifold is the muffler, above muffler is a metal panel, and above that is the lower edge of the tank. Not pictured to the rear is a vertical he's shield on the rear fuel tank bracket.

E10 will boil way sooner than non-ethanol fuel.

agreed... i'm not fond of ethanol blends in these old machines... carbs seem to hate it...

I've seen various brands do this with today's blended gas. Ethanol in the gas is the culprit. I'd start by servicing the cooling system, flush the radiator, new coolant, change the thermostat, etc. Engines running at a higher RPM will tend to get warmer than the same engine at a lower RPM.
